Seven announcing “angels” appear with trumpets and a golden halo along their upper edge. The “grim reaper” here is a Deinonychus, famous for its sickle-like claw, which is stepping over a stone threshold. Such sills were common at the base of early Renaissance portraits, since artists felt it was visually awkward explaining why the sitter was apparently cut off at the waist; the solution was to promote the notion the sitter was being seen through a window, and many subjects were painted as if to be leaning on the window’s sill or casting a shadow onto it.
